In 2009 I was contracted to run and manage the Broadway Viaduct Lower Maintenance District's public art initiative, with the goal to develop lasting public artworks for this corridor in North Downtown Denver that serves as a gateway entry to the city. The project involved a call for entries from artists within the River North Arts District towards the commissioning of artworks, through funds generated over a long period of time by property owners in the district. The project resulted in the selection of artists Mike Mancarella and Mike Whiting for placement of three distinct sculptural artworks, two fabricated specifically for the district and one previously completed. The project involved working with the City of Denver for placement and installation, with the city later adding the works to its broader collection. Mike Whiting’s “Pinkie & Mr. Green” were later loaned to the Denver Botanic Gardens in 2018 for the artist’s major solo exhibition “Pixelated,” widely considered one of the top contemporary art exhibitions in the state of Colorado that year.
