My post-college career began with Exhibit Systems, a design and fabrication firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah that produced work within the trade-show industry. I was hired as the assist to the head designer, who became an essential mentor. 18 months immersed in drafting, model building, design and fabrication methods led to several more years working as an independent designer with the offshoot firm Modus, which leveraged major national accounts in both the Ski and Automotive Industries. Additional opportunities at this time included design and fabrication for permanent museum and interpretive displays, as well as interior displays and graphic design. The experience led to the formation of Hammered Design as an independent design practice. This allowed me to pursue part-time interests with the Sundance Film Festival, as well my long-term association as a 35mm film projectionist, and journalist, with local Independent art-house cinemas.
Select corporations and entities that I had the great opportunity to develop designs for included Rossignol Ski and Snowboard, Elan / Nale. Nordica, Morton International, Arrow Dynamics, Scott Eyewear, Teltrust Telecommunications, Viewpoint Datalabs, Rahd Oncology, Medicode, Zebra Barcode Systems, REI Flagship store, Wasatch Brewery Retail Outlet, Hill Air Force Base Museum, UT, Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, ID, Jordanelle Visitor Center, UT, Kaibab Visitor Center, UT, Williams Visitor Center, AZ and the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee and numerous others.
The images here represent a very limited sample of my work completed in trade show design through the 1990’s. The majority of my projects were completed before computer technology replaced the drafting table and sketchbooks.
The Hydrogen Works project is a low-budget, high impact design that I took on in collaboration with independent designer David Schaich for a special exposition held in Denver, Colorado in the year 2001.
